About Carey

I am a hiker, but not really an experienced backpacker, who grew up car camping with my family.  I developed a love of the outdoors, especially the Rocky Mountains, where I grew up, and I live in the red rock high desert of Utah.  I am passionate about the environment, books (my Kindle rules!), music, animals, singing, photography, and hiking, obviously.  I am planning my 2012 thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail and I will be raising money for a non-profit called Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.

Damascus sick day

6-11-12

Oh no, now I've got it! I woke up last night to throw up and then spent the rest of the night violently ill. I can't hike today, so it's another day in Damascus and I don't even get to enjoy the food. I'll try some saltines and sprite and maybe chicken soup later. Thank goodness I am in a building with flush toilets and running water. A couple of times I know I would not have made it out of my tent in time to throw up. Other hikers have not been so lucky and got it out in the woods.

So sorry to hear you were sick - I got the bug the same night as well... on the mountain!
Today (June 22) I'm taking my first zero day since Hot Springs at Woods Hole Hostel just outside Pearisburg. It's lovely here - setting and hospitality not to be missed! I love VA but the weather has turned, Toni is catching a ride back to CT in a few days and I plan to go with her and continue hiking in cooler New England since I have to be back in Boston July 20th. Blaze is coming back on in Pearisburg and will hike with Nice Lady. Hope to stay in touch with all my new found trail friends - miss your cheerful disposition and singing! Please share with Eagle Eye (she promised me Blood Mt)!
