I left camp at about 9am today. It was later, but it sure felt good to "sleep in" until almost 7am. The sun was behind the clouds all day and it was dim and overcast again with a chill wind and some boggy spots to get around. Luckily, there was a double trail for most of the way so I could get around the mud.
I stopped for over an hour at a power cut, the strip cut down for the power lines, to call the bank and see what this $17 charge is that put my account into the negative. It turns out somebody got ahold of my debit card number and used it in Illinois. The lady I talked to was very nice and was interested in my hike and said I sounded cold. I was! I had to stop moving to make the call and even pacing didn't keep me warm enough. Anyway, my options were to cancel the card and have a new one sent to my home address, and be stuck in the meantime with no way to get cash, or I could put a risk alert on the card, which I did. Now it can only be used as a debit card, with the pin number. This could cause trouble with hotel reservations, but is still the better option for me right now. At least Eagle Eye has a card if we need one.
We are tenting in the Applebee Campsite near the Pilger Ruh trail. It is just north of the 501 Shelter, which I think I had heard was nice, but I can't remember, and Eagle Eye wanted to tent and said she'd build a fire here, so I agreed to stay here. It is warmer in the tent than in a shelter, and the fire was nice until it started to rain again. We are near an abandoned and collapsed building. I wonder what that was?
